    I’ve always been of two minds about the way big Pride festivals are handled. On the one hand, I think a lot of good comes out of Pride. Some people get a chance to see what it’s like to be their authentic selves for the first time because of Pride. I wrote previously about how my coming out was largely about wanting to join in this celebration of who I am at Pride. And a big, huge Pride festival isn’t going to be easily organized without a corporate sponsor.

    Welcome to the gayest time of year! It’s once again time for Pride! Pride means a lot of things for a lot of different people. I talked last year about how Pride was a big part of the reason I came out because I wanted to be part of this celebration of who I was. But Pride is more than a celebration. As a popular slogan reminds us, the first Pride was a riot.

    The trade-off with a show like Doctor Who is that, for all its ability to amaze, it has the equal ability to disappoint. While I appreciated the show’s expansion of their own mythology with the Timeless Child arc during the 13th Doctor era, a lot of people didn’t. I’ve always tried to brace myself for the fact that, someday, the show would do something that would disappoint me, be it a choice for lead actor or a plot device that I don’t approve of.

    The right wing has made it very clear that their ultimate goal is to return us to a version of the 1950s that never really existed, where gender roles are never challenged and LGBTQ+ people don’t exist, a world where men go to work and women stay home with babies and nobody ever questions the way of things. This week’s Doctor Who gives us a terrifying glimpse into a world just like that, a version of 2025 wished into being by an incel.
