Comic and impressionist James Adomian wraps his North American tour Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Irvine Improv before returning to SXSW Comedy in March. The live-comedy industry never played a larger role in sociopolitical debate than it did in 2024. But how much of that commentary, wonders James Adomian, was actually entertaining? “Funny is funny. There is a lot of surprising material that can make an audience lose it, whether they agree or not,” says Adomian, a Los Angeles resident since age 9.

On a recent Saturday night on Sunset Boulevard, a pair of black 1940s low-riders guided the diverse, sold-out crowd into the Comedy Store. Cypress Hill hung out in the green room. Los Angeles photographer and director Estevan Oriol oversaw six cameras and the taping of George Perez’s debut hour special, “Misunderstood,” presented by Foos Gone Wild. “There were no fights,” Perez enthuses.

Near the end of the Palm Springs International Comedy Festival awards on Sept. 21, event President Paul Cruz unexpectedly took the Hotel Zoso ballroom stage to present a special award to comedian Ahmed Ahmed. Ahmed, 54, host of the evening honoring such talent as Kathy Griffin, Cybill Shepherd, Luenell, Tom Arnold, Mo Collins, Roz Hernandez and Zach Noe Towers, was surprised to receive the festival’s Comedy Hall of Fame Award.
