When Sara Ghebremusse arrived at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia in 2017, she was the only Black female professor in the faculty. She had been working toward the position for several years. Her family is from Eritrea, where mining companies are accused of forced labour and other human rights violations, and Ghebremusse pursued law with an interest in economic and environmental justice.

A new Federal Court pilot project aims to reduce the number of judicial review applications around study permits
The Federal Court recently launched a pilot project to reduce its growing backlog of judicial review applications from study permit applicants.
The goal is to reduce the time it takes for students to apply for leave and judicial review of their permits. Typically, a JR takes 14 to 18 months.

Robert Harvie wants to change the justice system. After nearly 40 years of practicing law, he’s still trying to make legal services more affordable to Canadians. Harvie received the 2024 Service to the Profession award for the CBA Alberta/Law Society of Alberta Distinguished Service Awards. He is a former bencher from the Law Society of Alberta and former chair of the national CBA Family Law Section.
