Shopkeeper Karli Sarver smiles knowingly when talking about the phenomenon. “We know,” she said. “We’re not their jam. That’s OK.”Store co-owner Haley Burch laughed.

The La Salle/Putnam Educational Alliance for Special Education will host a Back to School Bash for students with disabilities and their families from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Streator City Park. The event will provide free food, games, activities and resources for families. Multiple businesses and agencies will have informational tables at the event. Parents and guardians can learn about opportunities and programs available for children with special needs.

Looking for a rush? Here’s one: jumping out of a plane almost 2.5 miles in the air and plummeting 120 mph toward earth. Skydive Chicago in Ottawa specializes in that thrill. It begins with a freefall from 13,000 feet in the sky. There’s a short-lived, stomach-lurching moment of acceleration when you transition from the 80 mph plane to the 120 mph fall. Next comes the wind, roaring in your ears and whipping at fabric, akin to leaning your head out the window of a fast-moving car. Sixty seconds tick by.

How many Illinois state parks have you visited? If you live in La Salle, Bureau or Putnam counties, I would wager the answer is at least two or three. You can likely check a few of the local ones off the list. Starved Rock, Matthiessen, Buffalo Rock, Illini, Gebhard Woods …But what about the rest of the parks in Illinois’ 55,499 square miles of land? Until February, I didn’t know how many parks and nature areas existed in Illinois.

Toni Pettit’s mornings used to begin with the same routine. She and her brother would greet their mother with, “Good morning, Ma.” Their mother would reply in Slovenian, “Dobro jutro dober dan, vsako jutro vsaki dan.”The phrase translates to “Good morning good day, every morning every day.”These days, Pettit’s mornings have a different routine. Tuesdays are spent in a kitchen preparing Slovenian salads, pastries and desserts.
