    I still remember the sting, years ago, when my high school freshman daughter declared at the dinner table that Facebook (FB) is “for old people”! Her peers and her generation seem to have mastered many social media platforms, like Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. The profile photo on my FB is that of our family when Claire was about two, which means my FB account was likely created 16-18 years ago.

    An excerpt from Safeguarding Physician Wellbeing. There are numerous books written by physicians of various specialties, primary care, and subspecialists, on the topic of physician burnout. Most physician authors, like me, have been inspired to write a book due to personal experience with a high degree of burnout, and/or have had academic interests and research on the topic. Writing such books can be cathartic, intended as a warning for our colleagues and future physicians in training.

This topic is highly personal to me and has impacted colleagues I know in otolaryngology who’ve suffered unanticipated and devastating career-ending injuries.

All such decisions are only possible based on countless patient-specific data, including history, exam, lab results, cultures, pathology reports, and imaging studies. The most pertinent are realtime vital signs and measurements during surgery and as monitored in critical care units.

    I give myself credit for not being in the habit of writing down a “list” of New Year’s resolutions. After all, studies show that typical aspirational resolutions are often not sustainable, even if achieved for a short while. Our enthusiasm and conviction during the holiday season for a “better self” the following year are likely due to positive mental and emotional perspective from quality time with friends and family, presents, time off of work, and even some liberal consumption of alcohol.
