Without a doubt, it has been a weird and wacky winter from a gardener’s standpoint. We went into winter in drought conditions in much of the state and the minor snow precipitation never really made a difference. So here we are on the brink of spring, with dry soil and wide temperature swings. While these conditions can be hard on all plants, we may see more obvious damage on evergreens, particularly in the form of burning, browning and bleaching.

By Ryan Murphy and Julie WeisenhornEmerald ash borers generally have a one-year life cycle that can extend to two years in a vigorously growing ash tree. EAB larvae live under the bark of ash trees and damage the tree's outer sapwood and vascular tissue (phloem) that carries food from the leaves to the rest of the tree. These tunnels girdle the trunk and branches, interrupting the flow of water and nutrients. A tree can be killed by EAB in as little as 2 to 4 years.
