As the No. 5 seed in the tournament, ASU was expected to take care of No. 8 Stanford on Tuesday, especially considering it had swept the Cardinal less than two weeks ago and also had its ace on the mound with senior left-handed pitcher Connor Markl.

The Sun Devils were down by two runs entering the bottom half of the sixth inning, but despite swinging some of the hottest bats in the country, ASU didn’t need to swing the bat a single time to complete the comeback.

That zero turned into one against UC San Diego. Mendoza hit a 382-foot home run to left field to extend the lead to 11 runs in the second inning against the Tritons.
