CHF 2024: Day 5Cassino ’44, James HollandThe searing sun gave way to cooler cloudier weather on Friday, the day of the military big beasts, James Holland, Max Hastings, Saul David and Anthony Beevor. James Holland’s account of the battle of Monte Cassino follows in the footsteps of other great such as Peter Caddick Adams who was in the audience. Holland’s Cassino ’44 will be published in the autumn but this talk will be available on the Festival’s YouTube channel.

CHF 2024: Day 4Ukraine: Rhetoric & Reality: Francis Dearnley, David Knowles, Hanna Shelest, Dominic NichollsThe formidable team from the Telegraph’s Ukraine podcast attracted one of the biggest turnouts as they tackled the gap between rhetoric and reality in the tow years since the invasion. Nicholls and team have several scoops under their belts, including the first confirmation by Ukraine intelligence that they were using US-supplied intel early on in the campaign.

CHF 2024: Day 3The Chalk Stream, Feargal SharkeyUndertones singer Feargal Sharkey gave what might have been the most anticipated talk of the festival, telling the story of how England’s unique chalk streams are dying because of negligence by the privatised water companies. As a keen fly fisherman Sharkey has seen first-hand the destruction caused as millions of tonnes of raw sewage are discharged into rivers, killing all aquatic life.

CHF 2024: Day 2The first two mornings of the festival are given over to the excellent schools’ programme. Busloads of youngsters descend on the site and get a special programme of talks and tours. The accompanying teachers all report game changing levels of new found enthusiasm. James Holland’s D Day and Monte Cassino talks received a many thumbs up. Britain’s Pagan Heritage, Ronald HuttonRonald Hutton is a national treasure and Chalke regular.
