But while the 3 might be called a forward, it often has more similarities to the 1 and the 2 than the 4 or the 5. And, these days, you’re just as likely to see a 4 play more on the perimeter than in the paint. So the sport has created other terms.

In the chair next to the unanimous All-American was Chris Moore, a fifth-year senior who saw his role decrease in his final season of college ball. No. 4 and No. 5 hugged, knowing this was the last time either of them would play at this level or with this team after a 79-73 loss in the Final Four. Broome then said something in Moore’s ear that caused him to shake his head.

The Alamodome can seat up to 70,000 fans, which is more than three times the capacity of the NCAA Tournament venues Auburn had to win at to get here. And it feels like the entire college basketball world is here. The Final Four goes on at the same time as the massive coaches convention. There are hundreds upon hundreds of media members credentialed for the games.

AUBURN — By the time most of you are reading this, I will either be at the Atlanta airport or on a flight to San Antonio. The Auburn Observer is going to cover the Final Four. This is the second-ever trip to the Final Four for Auburn men’s basketball — a program which, when I first started covering the team in 2013, was arguably the most hopeless high-major in the entire country. But this is the first-ever trip for me, the oldest son of a couple who first met playing intramural basketball.
