There's good reason for the church to be wary of social media influencers-particularly those who speak to spiritual matters. We aren't wrong to be disconcerted at the idea of Christians being led by online personalities who might be more charismatic than theologically sound or more creative than credible, especially when the influencers are disconnected from church discipleship and discipline themselves.

When my wife told me that my son received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at his football game, I was enraged. He'd aggressively thrown the ball back to the official he believed had missed a call. I flew into a lecture about leadership, respect for authority, and composure. I even called friends and family to register my disbelief and embarrassment.

When my grandfather died, a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. was hanging over his deathbed. His name was Bishop Thomas Lee Cooper, and he was part of the Black church's now-fading civil rights generation, which King defined. It's no great mystery why he and millions of other Americans held King in such high regard. This confessing Christian leader literally sacrificed his life to exemplify love of neighbor.

In Galatians, the apostle Paul writes about the "fruit of the Spirit" and the "works of the flesh." The former is a product of God's influence in our lives, and the latter are actions that come from humanity's corrupted and unredeemed disposition (Gal. 5:19-26). Among the works of the flesh, Paul mentions what the English Standard Version refers to as "rivalries," which the New International Version calls "selfish ambition" (v. 20). These are quarrels born of self-seeking.
