I play a lot of competitive shooters – and I mean a lot of competitive shooters. Whether it’s being an unfortunate son in Grey Zone Warfare, flipping cards in FragPunk, or smashing and grabbing in The Finals, this has been my default “gaming night with the friends” genre since I was in school many, many (many) years ago.

I’m sitting in a small theater, watching a behind-closed-doors demonstration of Resident Evil Requiem (RE9). As the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, I have to keep reminding myself it’s just a hallway. There, stretching out ahead was a simple hallway, a sconce lighting the door at the far end. Capcom’s Onimusha series is in the midst of a renaissance. First, we saw the release of the Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remaster in May, a game we said proves that a 20-year-old game can still cut deep in our review. Originally pegged for a 2022 release, it was pushed to 2023, then delayed indefinitely. Finally, after nearly two years of radio silence, it reemerged in Sony’s latest State of Play, and at Summer Game Fest, we finally got to go hands-on with it. We are happy to report that Pragmata is real, and it is cool as hell.

While the news is starting to die down about the Switch 2, one conversation is only gaining steam. Game prices have been thrown into question with Nintendo breaking the $70 barrier on many upcoming Switch 2 games, which makes the already incredible value of Game Pass even more appealing. This week in particular saw not one, not two, but three day-one additions to really show its worth. We still have Clair Obscur to look forward to soon, but each of these games is perfect for filling a dead weekend.
