Despite the many challenges faced by Pacific journalists in recent years, the Pacific International Media Conference highlighted the incredible strength and courage of the region's reporters. The three-day event in Suva, Fiji, co-hosted by the University of South Pacific, Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) and the Asia Pacific Media Network, was the first of its kind for Fiji in the last 20 years, marking the newfound freedom media professionals have been experiencing in the nation.

“If I’m honest, I wasn’t ready.”That’s Vasa Fia Collins reflecting on her decision to launch a podcast, that she started with her late husband Fa’anana Efeso Collins, who died suddenly on 21 February, 2024. Collins says the Rising Sun podcast, which premiered at an intimate event in Ōtara last week, was a passion project Fa’anana and her first began planning in the months after his mayoral campaign in 2022.

While many around the Pacific will be remembering Anzac Day this week, for members of the Tuvaluan community this will also be a time to remember a totally different aspect of the Second World War. On 23 April 1943 the Japanese bombed the Tuvaluan island of Funafuti, killing two American soldiers and one elderly Tuvaluan man named Esau.

New Zealand’s first Pacific women’s footballer has finally received her debut cap over four decades after taking the field against Australia. Rosie Ah Wong, who began playing for the Football Ferns in 1979 and scored the Ferns’ first ever goal against Australia’s Matildas, was presented her cap by New Zealand Football (NZF) president Johanna Wood to rounds of applause at Walter Massey Park in Māngere earlier this month. Rosie Ah Wong recieves her debut cap from New Zealand president Johanna Wood.

Four Ōtara primary schools have come together for a celebration of sport and Pacific culture, thanks to a new initiative by Healthy Families South Auckland (The Cause Collective). The initiative, called the Village Games movement, is all about getting Pacific children active through learning to play traditional games unique to their heritage.

Rugby greats Sir Bryan Williams, Jonah Lomu and Seiuli Fiao'o Fa'amausili will be among those honoured tonight as the first inductees to the Pasifika Rugby Hall of Fame. The others to be inducted at Eden Park Peter Fatialofa, Brian Lima, Waisale Serevi and George Smith. Pasifika Rugby Hall of Fame chairperson and All Blacks legend Savae Sir Michael Jones told Ma'a Brian Sagala on 531pi's Pacific Days, the event is about paying respect to those who have paved the way for others to excel.
