Our weather pattern will shift enough to push any threat of wildfire smoke out of the Northland for most of the weekend. Southerly winds sustained around 10 mph in northeast Minnesota and 5 to 10 mph in northwest Wisconsin are forecast on Saturday with high temperatures in the 70s. Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will develop across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Saturday afternoon and become numerous Saturday evening and night and into Sunday.

A subtle shift in the weather pattern is set to carry wildfire smoke across parts of the Northland this evening and part of Friday. An east-to-west band of heavy Canadian wildfire smoke will drift further south into northern Minnesota behind a cold front through the day and evening on Thursday. Most of this smoke will gradually retreat north into Canada and disperse throughout Friday afternoon.

Now that we are getting a break from all the wildfire smoke, skies will continue to clear out tonight. However, we will see some isolated showers and thunderstorms through the early evening. The flow of our weather pattern will become rather stagnant, but we will see afternoon to evening showers pop up through the remainder of the week. Most locations will be dry. Fog will likely develop Thursday night into Friday morning with rain cooling down the atmosphere.

Wildfire smoke continues to be the big weather talker across the Northland. The tri-state region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is under another Air Quality Alert until noon Wednesday. Dense surface smoke is being observed across Wisconsin is behind a passing cold front. As this cold front progresses to the southeast through Wednesday morning, dense smoke impacts will be observed statewide. Depending on where you are in the Northland, the effect the smoke has on you.

A passing cold front will help us out by bringing a little bit of rain. We won’t see enough to put a dent in our drier landscape, but any rain at this point helps. The cold front will also push additional wildfire smoke into the region. Another round of smoke is settling into the Northland from northwest to southeast this evening and will continue through tonight. Air Quality Alerts are in effect for Minnesota from the MN Pollution Control Agency and for Wisconsin from the WI DNR.
