But there’s a wrong kind of conversation, the badspeak, the kind of talking that the puritanical village elders of the internet would rather you didn't engage in: a good old-fashioned bitching session. Gossip is, as I’ve previously mentioned, good, actually. It’s an early warning system, a method of reaching out to the world’s darker corners in search of kindred spirits.

One of the benefits of freelancing and working from home is that you can be left alone with your own eccentricities. Offices are, essentially, full of bored people who would rather get paid to be on a twenty-four hour version of Gogglebox than finish half the tasks on their to-do list, which means they must cultivate imaginary rivalries and assign ‘office weirdos’ in the name of entertainment.

My memories of Borderline’s initial release, in 1984, are vague, because it flopped, and when you’re an eight-year-old future gay with pop sensibilities, you are only interested in the HITS, darling. That Borderline went belly up on first go isn’t entirely surprising. After the joyful dance sleaze of Lucky Star and Holiday, Madonna’s first two hits, Borderline seems twee, and saccharine – a song with puppy dog eyes and a begging bowl.

I’ve long been obsessed with finding something beautiful and romantic about an ending. I’ve never warmed to nostalgia or what-ifs, but to be somewhere and know it’s for the last time, and to anticipate the feeling of loss, to miss the person you are at that exact moment and never will be again, it’s always appealed. It’s the final second of innocence before the curtain draws back; the very last moment of joy before the scales fall from your eyes.
