    The Department of Philosophy at Columbia University has issued a statement about Mohsen Mahdawi, the philosophy major taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this past Monday. The statement, currently posted on the Department of Philosophy website, reads:It has come to the attention of members of the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University that one of our students, Mohsen Mahdawi, was detained in Vermont by agents of the Department of Homeland Security.

    The Berggruen Institute, a multidisciplinary international think tank dedicated to “exploring the ideas we need for our changing world,” last year launched an essay competition with two $25,000 prizes. It is running the competition again this year, but has now doubled the purse. The Berggruen Institute may be best known for its annual $1 million prize for philosophy and culture, first awarded in 2016 to Charles Taylor.

    Mohsen Mahdawi, a philosophy major at Columbia University who is due to graduate later this semester, was attending a US citizenship application interview in Vermont on Monday when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents wearing hoods and masks took him from the building, put him into an unmarked car, and drove off. His current whereabouts are “unknown”, said his lawyer, according to the BBC. Mahdawi is a green card holder.
