In my many years inside, I have seen jails and prisons in North Carolina become de facto rehab and mental health institutions. Here, and across the country, people are too often locked up while still in active addiction, and the effects of narcotic withdrawal can last long after any physical sickness has worn off. Inside, I have frequently encountered women who are jumpy, unfocused and erratic, even six months after their last hit.

The Milwaukee Bucks have shown interest in Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine. The Bucks are reportedly looking for additional perimeter help. The Bulls have continued to make LaVine available, despite reports that LaVine would now prefer to remain in Chicago for the rest of this season. The Bucks have also been linked to Bradley Beal of the Phoenix Suns. That would possibly come as part of a deal that lands Jimmy Butler in Phoenix.

We were on high alert once the rain started coming down thick and heavy. It was a Thursday morning in late September, and the people here inside the Western Correctional Center for Women in North Carolina wandered restlessly. Hurricane Helene was headed our way. “I hope it blows the fences down and they have to let us go,” one woman said. I figured we’d be trapped here, and guards seemed to think they’d be stuck, too.

Zach LaVine was diagnosed with a sprained AC joint and a partial dislocation of his left shoulder on Thursday. LaVine is questionable for the Bulls' matchup against the Nets on Friday night. LaVine suffered the injury on Wednesday night against the Magic. Jalen Smith is also listed as questionable with left knee soreness.

With training camp set to open, the Chicago Bulls got good news on the injury front for two important players. Patrick Williams and Lonzo Ball are both ready to participate in practices when camp opens. There was a recent report that Williams had to shut down summer workouts due to soreness in his surgically repaired foot. Bulls lead front office executive Arturas Karnisovas said that's behind Williams and that he's "ready to go" at the start of camp.
