The QB budget still sits among the league’s lowest, even with the recent additions. The Vikings’ striking change to their quarterback position is largely responsible for financing the major free-agent additions from the offseason (though there’s a limit to that open room). There’s nothing new in the mere insistence that having J.J. McCarthy — and the savings that emanate from his rookie contract — helps to keep the finances ample, robust, and healthy.

Chaz Chambliss was scooped up as part of Minnesota’s UDFA haul, a Vikings pickup who has been a bit under the radar due to lots of attention going toward Logan Brown, Tyler Batty, and Silas Bolden. The Georgia edge rusher is going to face an uphill battle to get onto the roster. The top of the position is solidified with an excellent twosome — veterans Jonathan Greenard alongside Andrew Van Ginkel — and then a tremendously-gifted young fella: Dallas Turner.

Already, a key member of the Vikings’ d-line has been shown the door (at least in the present moment). Well-respected veteran Jonathan Bullard has been a mainstay for the defensive front over these past several seasons, putting in work for both of Ed Donatell and Brian Flores. Across 46 games and 38 starts with the Vikings, Bullard piled up 1,537 snaps on defense (the most of any team in his career as an NFL journeyman). He no longer has a spot on the roster and one wonders who is going to follow.
