    Buyisile ‘Tracy’ Nyongwana is a double graduate at 22 after enjoying five years of support from The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund. Tracy recently finished up her BSc Chemistry and Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand and is days away from starting her first graduate job at Sasol. It is an achievement that once seemed impossible for the bright youngster, who saw limited opportunities growing up in rural Ndwedwe.

    Say “retirement village” and I immediately picture somewhere like the older Ambers in Howick, little square houses all the same, chocolate box garden out front, old folks drifting about like memories. What a pleasant surprise then to visit Brettenwood’s retirement village last Saturday. It’s nothing like what I imagined. Most of the houses are well spaced out, hidden from one another by the abundant trees and woody undergrowth.

    Protec Tongaat has once again demonstrated excellence, as the class of 2024 achieved a 100% matric pass rate, with two pupils earning seven distinctions each.
