Donning a purple tie and a large grin, former Speaker of the California State Assembly and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown greeted an intimate audience of around 30 students and faculty at CMC’s Rose Institute of State and Local Government on Nov. 5. This smaller gathering preceded Brown’s talk at the CMC Athenaeum that evening which over 100 members of the 5C community registered to attend. Brown has been at the forefront of California and national politics for decades.

Beginning with this year’s freshman class, students at Claremont McKenna College will not be able to pursue majors in specific STEM fields including chemistry, neuroscience or biology. Instead, the majors have been replaced by a single “Integrated Sciences” major. The change, which follows CMC’s decision to , has prompted concern and frustration among first-years on campus.

On Thursday, April 18 and Friday, April 19, students at Claremont McKenna College (CMC) voted in support of a resolution written in response to the arrest of 20 students at Pomona College. In an email sent to the CMC student body at 10:22 a.m. on Friday, the results revealed that 419 students — or 30.76 percent of the student body — participated in the vote. Of those who voted, 70.24 percent voted to approve the resolution and 29.76 percent voted to reject it.

On Monday, April 15, the Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) Senate voted 11:3 to pass a student resolution written in response to the April 5 arrests of 20 5C students at Pomona College. The resolution condemns the Pomona administration’s use of police force and issuing of suspensions to the arrested students and calls for revisions to the 7C-wide demonstration policy and . Discussions of a student resolution began at an April 8 Senate meeting.
