    In 2019, Gov. Ron DeSantis, signed the Infectious Disease Elimination Act (IDEA). This law allows county commissioners the option to start syringe exchange programs in their jurisdictions. Syringe exchange programs attempt to reduce the risk of transmitting infectious diseases by exchanging used needles for sterile, unused needles. These programs also aim to reduce the likelihood of inappropriate needle disposal.
