1 INTRODUCTION Biological sex is defined by female or male based on chromosome composition (e.g., XX, XY), gonads (e.g., ovaries or testes), and gonadal hormones (e.g., estrogen or androgen). Intersex individuals are born with biological sex characteristics (e.g., reproductive anatomy and hormones) that do not fit exclusively to a male or female biological sex classification.
