Americans earning a regular salary may have trouble living comfortably in all 50 states. The median annual wage for individuals was just below $62,000 at the end of 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But it takes a salary of at least $80,829 for a single adult to live comfortably in West Virginia, the most affordable state, according to a recent SmartAsset study.

Students and families borrowing money for college will get a slight reprieve for the upcoming school year. The interest rate for undergraduate federal student loans disbursed between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026 will be 6.39%, down from 6.53% for the 2024-25 school year, the Department of Education announced on May 30. Graduate loans will come with a 7.94% rate and Parent Plus loans will have an 8.94% interest rate, both lower than the prior year.
