May 1, 2025 Ald. Jonathan Nieuwsma (4th) was already considering next year’s city budget about a week into 2025. At a 4th Ward meeting in January, he warned his constituents of potentially challenging 2026 budget discussions. The second-term councilmember told The Daily that he wanted to inform residents about what could be the “roughest” budget cycle in recent years. A 1% grocery tax, which is set to expire statewide on Jan. 1, 2026, will become a topic of conversation, Nieuwsma said.

Gennifer Geer (Weinberg ’24) said she wanted to make the 3rd Ward City Council race “obnoxious,” flooding voters with messaging. This fall, the 27-year-old threw her hat in the ring to fill Ald. Melissa Wynne’s seat following the 3rd Ward councilmember’s decision against seeking reelection after serving since 1998. Geer said she employed comprehensive digital and on-ground strategies to reach young voters, a demographic with traditionally low turnout in municipal elections.

Evanston’s Reparations Committee has delivered more than $5 million in reparation payments to 212 recipients, but committee members discussed Thursday the detriment of low cannabis sales on their ongoing efforts. Before hearing remarks and taking questions from residents, committee member Robin Rue Simmons said cannabis sales tax revenue from 2019 was “far less” than expected, primarily due to only one dispensary being open rather than the projected three.

Senior Lauryn Nguyen finished eighth as No. 10 Northwestern ended sixth among a stacked field at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina. In the 13th edition of the competition, the ’Cats rallied behind a 4-over-par second round to place in the middle-to-top of the pack. Nguyen, who finished the tournament at 3-over, contributed to those efforts with a 1-under 70. The Seattle native carded three birdies on the front nine that day.
