INTRODUCTION Astronomical observations suggest that planetary systems like our own form when the gas and dust phases of a molecular cloud undergo gravitational collapse, leading to the formation of a protostar and sometime after, the coalescing of planetesimals, parent bodies, the solid cores of gas giants, and terrestrial planets.
