Wild Woodbine, a cigarette that used to be made by W.D. & H.O. Wills, once issued a handbook with guidelines for British soldiers arriving in India. It was intended to ease their sojourn in our land. The strangeness of hatred for the Other India, Dec. 8 -- To be honest, I'm struggling for the right word. I wouldn't call it inexplicable because that suggests it cannot be explained. Nor would I call it deplorable though if others did, I wouldn't rush to disagree. No, I'd perhaps plump for strange, in the sense of both bizarre and bewildering. But is that the mot juste? To be honest, I’m struggling for the right word. I wouldn’t call it inexplicable because that suggests it cannot be explained. That’s not all. Female security staff must be present in all school buses. Men, presumably, are unable or unwilling to keep young girls safe or, worse, are actually potential threats to them. And women’s clothing stores can only have female staff. Men cannot be trusted to serve women without endangering them.

We all know Ratan Tata the industrialist. He was in a class of his own. But what was he like as a person? What sort of childhood did he have? Were there women he loved but did not marry? And what were the things that mattered the most in his private life? Normally we would never have found out. The great joy of Thomas Mathew’s recently published book Ratan Tata: A Life is that he reveals the answers. Tata’s parents divorced when he was just 10 and he was brought up by his grandmother.
