LAS VEGAS — Lexi Thompson attracted crowds to TPC Summerlin that were bigger and more boisterous than had been seen on a Thursday or Friday at the Shriners Children's Open in more than a decade. During the first round, the billowing crowd included men who had found their way to the game back when there were few girls’ golf teams in schools and women’s access to country club courses and clubhouses was restricted or altogether prohibited.

LAS VEGAS — The Englishman Matt Wallace emerged from scoring on Friday and asked his caddie where Lexi Thompson stood on the leaderboard. The defending champion Tom Kim bounded out of the scoring trailer shortly thereafter and reported that Thompson was in trouble on the fifth hole.

LAS VEGAS — Visitors to this city are assaulted by noise, be it the bells and whistles of the slot machines or the drilling and hammering of construction. The usual cacophony was exacerbated this week by a small but loud chorus of critics deriding Lexi Thompson’s participation in the Shriners Children’s Open, the third of the PGA Tour’s seven Fall Series events. Thompson, 28, an 11-time LPGA tour winner from Delray Beach, has dealt with naysayers since she was a 12-year-old golfing phenom.

LAS VEGAS — The breeze was down, the sun was high in the sky and Lexi Thompson was battling the boys on the golf course. Tuesday felt just like old times, except the PGA Tour’s Michael Kim and Ben Griffin were standing in for Thompson’s older brothers, Nicholas and Curtis, and the course was TPC Summerlin, not Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, where Thompson fell in love with the game as a child while competing against her brothers and their friends.
