Waveform monitoring is routinely performed for patients with impending or existing critical illness. Continuous vital sign monitoring typically involves recording of heart rate with single or multi-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), oxygen saturation with pulse oximetry, respiratory rate through chest impedance or capnography, and arterial blood pressure measured intermittently or continuously using an arterial catheter.
