There is a park at Caledon Central Public School named after a young girl who died, along with her mother, in a fire at their apartment in the north end of Caledon. The fire happened early on Canada Day in 2022 in a barn that had been converted into apartments on Mountainview Road near Highway 9. Student Ellie Wratten, 6, and her mom, Jenny Bullock, lived in one of the apartments and died in the fire. But the community may never know why or what caused the fire that day.

Southfields Village Public School teacher Melissa Tamming has spent the year exposing her young students to the community and the natural environment around them. The class was out walking a few months ago and noticed neighbours would bring their dogs onto the school grounds but neglect to pick up after them and sometimes litter.

The town has been working for the last few years to crack down on people parking and storing tractor trailers on agricultural properties — but truck depots aren’t the only illegal use gaining prevalence in farming communities. Coun. Lynn Kiernan said illegal event centres are “out of control” in Caledon. She brought up the issue June 4 at Caledon council when discussing a new task force to address illegal trucking.

A Brampton man admitted to breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s basement apartment and stabbing her to death while their seven-year-old son slept in the next room. On Tuesday in Brampton’s Superior Court of Justice, Linval Ritchie, 32, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Vanessa Virgioni. There were about 20 people in the court; many were family and friends of the victim.
