As National Comic Book Day coincides with Banned Books Week this year, graphic novels find themselves at the center of a nationwide controversy over censorship and educational content. According to recent data from the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom, the number of graphic novels facing censorship attempts has skyrocketed in recent years. In 2023, 378 different graphic novels were threatened with bans or challenges, with a total of 1,020 censorship attempts recorded.

Dark Horse Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing have announced the launch of a new “Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories” original graphic novel line. Each volume will stand alone as a brilliant showcase of some of Star Wars most iconic characters, starting with Qui-Gon Jinn.

Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams–authored by Bartosz Sztybor, CD Projekt Red’s comic book and animation narrative director–has won the prestigious 2023 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story or Comic. The Hugo Awards, which the World Science Fiction Society operates, recognize the best science fiction and fantasy works of the previous year.

One year ago, New York Comic Con, the largest pop culture event in the East Coast, rejected all panel proposals related to the Jewish history and culture of comic books, an industry birthed predominantly from the minds and pens of Jewish creators.
