TALLAHASSEE, FL — The suspect in the Florida State University shooting that killed two people and injured five others was a political science major at the university and had been active in youth programs at the sheriff's office where his mother was a deputy. Phoenix Ikner, 20, is accused in the shooting that happened about noon Thursday on the campus near the student union, authorities have said.

GREENBELT, MD — Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen met Thursday night with the Beltsville man who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration last month, a day after El Salvador officials refused to allow him to meet with the man detained at a notorious gang prison. Van Hollen, a Democrat, met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in a hotel in San Salvador, photos shared by the senator's office and by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele showed, the New York Times reported.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River High School East student was honored Wednesday night for being named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Michael J. Pavao received a commendation at the Toms River Regional Board of Education meeting honoring his achievement. Pavao was among more than 1.3 million high school juniors who took the PSAT in 2024, the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. He was among 16,000 students named semifinalists, including nearly 500 in New Jersey.

David F. Hohsfield, 69, has filed court documents seeking to be released from prison after he was sent back on a parole violation, NJ.com reported.
