Indiana homeowners hoping to take advantage of tax credits on new clean energy upgrades and purchases could lose thousands of dollars in incentives if the U.S. House’s federal budget proposal moves forward. The federal spending plan, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, currently ends homeowner savings on solar panel and battery installations, efficient appliances and other energy-saving home improvements such as new doors and windows, biomass stoves and energy audits.

Amanda Malott’s son Andre "AJ" Edwards Jr. was 14 when he went down to play near the Silver Creek dam with some friends last year. A large billboard loomed over the creek where the boys were headed, encouraging southern Indiana locals to “Check out New Albany’s Silver Creek Landing.” It depicted several people standing above a small dam, and one figure dangling their legs over the edge.

The diesel-like smell sometimes rising off Lake Michigan near BP’s oil refinery in Whiting gets so bad that surfer Mike Calabro and his girlfriend suffer headaches and need to get out of the water for relief. Growing up in Whiting, Calabro learned how to surf at the beach next to the refinery. He lives in Chicago now but still makes the 40-minute drive down to his old stomping grounds to hit the waves.
