CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — An American flag placed on top of Chimney Rock is giving those in Western North Carolina hope. Chimney Rock in Rutherford County was one of the areas that experienced damage in the aftermath of Helene. The Chimney Rock State Park posted a photo of the flag atop Chimney Rock, which their team journeyed to the area to place, in a social media post. They said the flag is a beacon of hope in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — First responders rescued four people and evacuated 106 people over the weekend in the Chimney Rock area in the aftermath of Helene. Pamlico County Emergency Management said their rescue swimmers were able to swim across the river after abandoning their boat to reach Chimney Rock. They then began assisting the Chimney Rock Fire Department with rescues and evacuations.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Cummings High School is mourning the loss of a student-athlete. Alamance-Burlington Schools officials confirmed 15-year-old varsity football player Malik Mebane died after he collapsed while walking out to the field for practice on Monday. He was in 10th grade. The team's trainer began CPR on Malik while 911 was called. EMS arrived and transported Malik to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — Wilkes County EMS confirms that an 8-year-old boy was found dead in a small pond near his home at around noon on Wednesday. Deputies responded to South Lomax Road in Ronda in reference to a missing/runaway young boy. The search spanned over the course of 16 and a half hours, deputies said. Zachariah William Walker, 8 from Ronda, had non-verbal autism, according to Wilkes County Emergency Management.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is dead after a disturbance call led to a police chase in Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem police said they responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons involving a person with a knife in the 600 Block of Waughtown Street around 11:40 p.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found the suspect and victim's cars and tried to stop the suspect's car from leaving the parking lot.
