More from Motoring For thousands of years now, human beings have stood around, pointing at faraway places. I’m pretty sure that’s how our ancestors got wherever they did without the convenience of Google Maps. All they had was first intent and then direction, most likely without any clue about their destinations or the consequences. Not like they had an abundance of choices back then, considering the absence of ‘civilisation’ as we ‘know’ it, and because they were truly travelling to survive.

I’m a bit giddy with anticipation these days. After nearly three months of hemming and hawing, the good folks at Bajaj finally confirmed that the KTM 390 SMC R will be launched in April 2025. More from Motoring As I type this, I’m sitting in a plane, shortly after take off from Delhi. Somewhere far below, I imagine friends rolling through Rajasthan in a car. How I wish I was with them, instead of jostling for elbow space with the gentleman next to me who clearly cannot decipher what disgusted looks mean. In this cramped seat inside a high-pressure tube occupied by 200 people, I cannot help but be struck by the contrast between being transported and travelling.

More from Motoring Goa has a way of turning me into more of myself, for better or for worse (I like to think it’s always the former). Maybe it’s the vastly diminished frequency of traffic signals, but I suspect it runs deeper than that and is usually aided by a bottle lined with condensation. Goan beaches are beautiful, but I prefer looking at them from a comfortable distance. I also don’t quite care for the timbre of the Konkani language; it sounds a touch too brusque to my ears.

A church is an idea older than a convertible, but there’s no contest as to which is more fun to be in. And how about this — once upon a time (1998), someone had the idea of making a small convertible in India, with the complete vehicle assembled in Bangalore, and a fibreglass body made in the land of churches (among other things). A convertible tub made in Goa? Isn’t that one of the aptest automotive expressions possible in India?
