These spiny or slimy ocean creatures display an astonishing diversity of appearances, behaviors and lifestyles—and many are increasingly threatened Few animals seem less animal-like than sea cucumbers. The long, slender beings often appear motionless like the vegetable they resemble as they bask on the seafloor. They lack a brain, eyes or obvious features apart from a mouth and anus. Neither are sea cucumbers especially appealing to human senses.

But then I reach the Dahlem Seed Bank at the German city’s botanical gardens, and botanist Elke Zippel guides me to a freezing chamber in the cellar, at a cool minus 11.2 degrees Fahrenheit, and the warmth rushes out of my body.

Alguns meses atrás, no meu novo apartamento em Berlim, na Alemanha, meu vaso sanitário e eu entramos em guerra. Por mais que eu esfregasse, não havia produto de limpeza que conseguisse eliminar aquela camada de calcário acumulada dentro dele. Frustrada depois de tantas tentativas, recorri ao Google até encontrar uma página que recomendava o uso de vinagre – que, por sinal, o morador anterior havia deixado no apartamento em grande quantidade.
