Kristin Hook Ph.D. ’16 is challenging Chip Roy (R-T.X.) for his house seat in Texas’s 21st congressional district during this fall’s elections. The district contains several Austin neighborhoods and surrounding areas in Central Texas. Hook will face tough odds running as a Democrat in a House district that has not voted for a Democratic representative since 1976, when Robert Krueger (D-T.X.) was reelected to his House seat.

Three new dispensaries are set to open soon in and around Ithaca, including Collegetown’s first dispensary. These additions will bring the total number of dispensaries in Tompkins County to six, all of which opened in the last 18 months. Opening soon are The Highly Connected on Fulton Street, Collegetown Dispensary on Dryden Road in the City of Ithaca and Upstate Haze on Dryden Road in the town of Dryden. All three are slated to open their doors to customers in the next three months.

Administration United Auto Workers Local 2300 — the union that represents approximately 1,200 Cornell dining, custodial, maintenance and other workers — has voted to authorize a strike that could start Monday, Aug. 19, the first day of Cornell’s new student move-in. According to UAW, 94 percent of Local 2300 members voted for the strike authorization. UAW Local 2300 has set an Aug. 18th deadline for the University to meet their demands.

New York State Sen. Lea Webb (D) announced $25,000 in grant funding allocated to Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services at a Monday event held at CARS’s West State Street office in downtown Ithaca. CARS, which was founded in 1972, provides both residential and outpatient services to those recovering from addiction in the area.

The Ithaca Common Council will discuss a new piece of proposed environmental legislation that aims to protect birds from untimely deaths. The council’s proposed ordinance, sponsored by Fourth Ward Alderperson Patrick Kuehl, would require all new buildings to meet the standard set by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leed rating system to receive the Reducing Bird Collisions Credit.
