If you’re reading this, chances are good that you read other stories about climate change too. Looking around at the news yesterday, you may well have stumbled onto any number of Earth Day–inspired cases for optimism: “tiny climate actions” like adjusting the thermostat and propagating your plants, profiles of environmental do-gooders, steps to becoming the “best planetary citizen possible.” Those kinds of cheery spreads are standard fare for Earth Day.

This week, world leaders and central bankers will convene in Washington D.C. for the annual spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. Both the chaos coursing through the global economy and another, related, prospect will loom over the week’s proceedings: whether the U.S. will decide to exit both these bodies. The Trump administration is currently conducting a review of its membership in international institutions, expected to produce its first findings this summer.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency could not withhold $14 billion worth of climate spending it froze in mid-February, prompting several of the organizations affected to file lawsuits against the administration. The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund—allocated by the Inflation Reduction Act—provided $20 billion to eight groups to pursue clean energy projects benefiting low-income communities.
