I can safely say we’re on team light dinners for summer. The warmer weather has me craving salads, fish, and light summer pasta salads that don’t leave me feeling heavy and bleh — and honestly, who wants to be stuck in a blazing hot kitchen these days? But hey, I still want to be satisfied. Can’t all be about salads and cheese plates, right?

I’m so excited for all these recipe ideas to help you figure out what to make with fresh August produce, because it is just so outstanding. Many of us on the Cool Mom Eats team made the leap to CSA memberships when Covid limited our access to local farmer’s markets, and we’ve stuck with it! CSAs are great for so many reasons, but sometimes we get a few ingredients that we aren’t used to cooking with. In my opinion, that can be fun. But also, a little work.

A lot of people see fall as the time for all things pumpkin spice, but I’m staunchly on Team Caramel Apple. It just feels like fall to me. I made my first apple crisp of the season this weekend — so fantastic. Now I’m inspired to find more ways to pair sweet, buttery caramel with tart Granny Smith apples before they go out of season.

July is such a perfect time for fresh produce — and the delicious family recipes that make use of them. My backyard garden is starting to produce some radishes and cabbage right about now, and I’m seeing the most delicious peaches and tomatoes at local roadside stands lately. So I am going to be picking dinner recipes for my family that focus on July’s fresh produce, so we can make the most of these ingredients while they’re at their peak.

September means new backpacks and football kickoff and pumpkin spice everything, but mid-month, September becomes Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15). So we’ve put together some of our very favorite children’s books, middle-grade books, and YA books honoring Hispanic heritage. Because there’s often no better way to honor any wonderful, diverse, complex, inspiring culture than to dive into some books about it with our kids.
