The Sunshine Coast is on land traditionally owned by the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara peoples. It runs from the Glass House mountains in the south, and north to Noosa – about a 50-minute drive on the Bruce Highway. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. There’s one of everything on the four-deck ship: restaurant, bar, cafe, lounge, sun deck and lobby. Easy! The common spaces are only crowded pre-excursion, when everyone’s in a tizz. Cool weather turns passengers off the top deck, so I fetch my in-room picnic blanket for some prized alone time with the swans and chalky cliffed Norman countryside. A herb garden, a hot tub and the Sky Grill are up there too. A wall of wine upscales the entry to the Panorama Restaurant.

We moved to the Parramatta area from Sydney’s east in 2012; the big change was having a real sense of excitement to explore the area whenever we had time. You get so rewarded when you explore the western suburbs, from a food and a cultural perspective. It’s a cliche to talk first about food with a culture that’s new to you, but it is an amazing gateway as it makes you think about who cooked the food and their connections with neighbouring businesses.

One of the main challenges for any group of improvising musicians is to figure out ways to push forward without repeating yourself. One would imagine this is especially true for the legendary Australian trio The Necks, both because they specialise in ultra minimal longform improvised soundscapes, and because they’ve been pursuing these sounds for more than thirty-five years now.

I live in Eltham, Melbourne now but I kept my sculpture studio in Frankston. Frankston is about 50 minutes south of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, on land traditionally owned by the Boonwurrung people. The town centre isn’t cute; it’s not like, “Oh, look at those beautiful old buildings.” It’s at the end of the metro line so there’s characters coming in from everywhere and it has a colourful energy. I love it for all those reasons.

FoodPort Stephens is two and a half hours north of Sydney on country traditionally owned by the Worimi. It’s a huge area but tourists usually just think of Nelson Bay. When locals refer to “the bay”, though, we mean Anna Bay to Soldiers Point, about a 30-minute drive, with Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Corlette and Salamander Bay in between. When we moved here 18 years ago there weren’t many food or coffee options. Thanks to more people moving up from Sydney, that’s changed.
