Anna Cordingley’s design crafts meticulously observed locales for this smeared kaleidoscope of small-town gothic, from a bloodstained laundromat to the inebriated confines of a seedy karaoke bar. And a large and talented cast has been assembled to play Hope Hill’s denizens. You won’t be able to glean every jot and tittle of their stories in one play-through, though you’ll be able to deduce much from what you do see.

Sometimes country music is, yes, all about beer and trucks (no complaints). But in some of its finest moments it is three supremely talented women with no trucks left to give. The Chicks opened their show at Rod Laver Arena on Monday with Gaslighter – the title track from their 2020 album that draws from singer Natalie Maines’ divorce.

The last time the Chicks were here, in 2017, they still had the Dixie – and its slavery connotations – in their name. After the death of George Floyd in 2020 they removed it. The backlash they faced in 2003 for criticising the USA’s invasion of Iraq inspired Not Ready to Make Nice which remains one of their absolute best and they brought all their raw power to it.
