However the role of the Voluntary Interceptors is equally important but more obscure. While Christmas is the time of the birth of Christ, it is also the pupping season of the grey seal. And as the three kings travelled from afar, so many wildlife enthusiasts venture forth to the chilly and very windy North Norfolk coast to see this amazing wildlife spectacle. Now Suffolk is also blessed with its first breeding colony at Orford Ness, although this site is protected against human disturbance during the pupping season.

The Broads with enchanted waterways meeting endless skies is East Anglia’s only national park. It is Britain’s largest protected wetland. Spanning parts of Norfolk and Suffolk it is easily reachable and offers the ideal place to recharge the soul. There are nature reserves to visit, boats to hire, and paths to walk off the excesses of Christmas. The Broads are man-made. Medieval digging of peat for fuel created a network of ditches.

Not all festive cruises go according to plan. December is be a good time to see the beautiful icy Nordic landscapes, whales and the Northern Lights. MS Maud offered exceptionally good food, expedition talks and a traditional Norwegian Christmas display, a Gingerbread Town, made by the Hurtigruten chefs. But as I, and 265 passengers and 131 crew found out, there are risks attached to a trip crossing the North Sea in midwinter. Even a decorative gingerbread town can be dangerous.

Norwich City Council rents out over 14,000 properties. Last year, the council was found to be among the worst performing landlords in the country. The Housing Ombudsman found a 100% maladministration rate. This was the highest of any council in the country. The national average was 55%. In every single finding, the council was required to make financial recompense for their failure to handle complaints from tenants across the city in a timely and appropriate manner.
