Officials believe that all 67 people aboard an American Airlines flight and an Army helicopter were killed when the two aircraft collided in midair while approaching Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport Wednesday night. As of reporting, at least 55 bodies — including those of three soldiers who were aboard the helicopter — have been pulled from the Potomac River amid an ongoing recovery effort and identified, D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said at a Feb. 2 press briefing.

It has now been a week since the wildfires started ravaging Southern California, fueled by powerful winds. At least 24 people have died as a result of the wildfires, and more than a dozen people remain missing. The Palisades and Eaton fires alone, which started on Jan. 7, have now burned about 60 square miles — an area almost as big as Washington, D.C., which is 68.3 square miles.

Four wildfires fueled by ferocious winds are now scorching thousands of acres in Southern California, with zero containment as of Wednesday morning. More than 80,000 people are under evacuation orders in the Los Angeles area. According to latest update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), the Palisades Fire has reached nearly 3,000 acres; the Eaton Fire is covering 400 acres; the Hurst Fire, over 500 acres; and the Woodley Fire, at 75 acres.
