4 1/1 A festival celebrating the best of Cumbria enjoyed sunshine and large crowds last weekend. Country Fest took place at the Westmorland County Showground, Crooklands, drawing visitors to the county to enjoy the festivities. The 17th edition of the two-day festival offered animal displays, live music, food and shopping alongside showcases of motorbikes and vintage cars.

Peacock Farm in Staveley have offered schools in the area a chance to learn more about honey and the life cycle of bees from their bee expert. The farm diversified into keeping five beehives after hearing that the insects needing a new home. Farm owner Andrew Peacock, said: “I met our bee man when he was installing some air conditioning for us, he started telling me about his bees and that their hives needed to be moved.

Barney Strange and his family are among the residents of Cowgill who have faced a 22-mile detour to access healthcare and other services since a landslip closed the road last year. The C5101 was closed near the Denthead Viaduct on November 24 after a section of the supporting slope slid into the river. “I fear for the safety of my family if nothing changes,” said Mr Strange. “This has been the hardest time of our lives.

The 17th Country Fest will take place at the Westmorland County Showground, Crooklands on May 31 and June 1. The event will offer popular favourites including Shetland pony racing and giant tortoises and new attractions such as a skateboard display and climbing wall.
