Britain’s loss to Argentina on Friday, combined with other results in the group, meant Leon Smith’s side went into the final tie knowing only a 3-0 victory would send them to the finals in Malaga in November. Unsurprising as the Birmingham-born wing has a grandmother from Dublin and grandfathers hailing from County Galway and Cork. I have covered rugby union for 13 years and as much as I admire Ireland’s ascension as a Test power, I don’t become sentimental.
