On 1 April, Washington DC resident Alex Saint woke up to an unexpected email in her inbox. "Your duties have been identified as either unnecessary or virtually identical to duties being performed elsewhere in the agency," it read. "You will be separated from the Federal service effective June 2, 2025."It wasn't an April Fools' joke. Alex and most of her team of communications specialists at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had been cut by DOGE.

Oleksiy Kliuiev has had to get used to working under fire. He leads a group of volunteers helping civilians caught in the fighting on Ukraine’s frontline. Last September, he and his team were nearly hit in a drone strike as they rushed to help residents under bombardment in the Sumy region, close to Ukraine's north-eastern border with Russia. "By the time we volunteers arrived, there had already been two hits on the hospital by Shahed drones," Mr Kliuiev, who filmed the strike, tells Sky News.
