Rachel Hunt, the daughter of four-term Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt, looks likely to become the state’s next lieutenant governor. Hunt defeated Republican Hal Weatherman, a longtime political operative but first-time candidate. With all precincts reporting as of Wednesday morning, Hunt had 49.44 percent of the vote to Weatherman’s 47.75. North Carolina is among just 17 states where the governor and lieutenant governor are elected separately, rather than via a shared ticket.

Anderson’s experience isn’t the exception; it’s the rule, according to a federal lawsuit that the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation, Disability Rights North Carolina, and law firm Arnold & Porter filed on April 18.
