Over Labor Day Weekend, I visited the Seattle Convention Center for the annual PAX West game convention. PAX is a fan-focused event that caters to all things gaming with an emphasis on console, PC, and tabletop games. It draws over 100,000 attendees and also has events in Boston, Philadelphia (PAX Unplugged), and Melbourne, Australia. This year was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had at PAX West, thanks to the fact that the organizers had simplified how it was laid out.

Nothing excites me more than journeying to far off places in search of delicious foods, wondrous sights, and of course, renowned escape rooms. I don’t get writer’s block. It’s a problem that other people deal with. The last time that I had writer’s block was 2009 when I was on the final page of my Graduate Capstone… and if I’m being honest with myself, that wasn’t writer’s block at all. That was a burnt out grad student staring down the barrel of significant life change. Eventually I just sat down and wrote the damn thing, and it was easy once I got out of my own way.

RECON talks are powerful and actionable. At RECON Boston in 2022, I learned how to position my body to foster welcoming group dynamics. I saw lightbulbs go off in the minds of the whole room, reacting to an innovative reset mode. And I saw speakers transform into character on stage, to demonstrate the importance of The Magic Circle. These RECON talks were designed for the stage and made me think about experience design in new ways.
