After almost two months out sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, jockey Carleen Hefel says she’s nearing a return to the races. “My shoulder is feeling really good and I started back riding work last week,” she said. “I’ve been doing physio for the past seven weeks and it’s feeling good and has a good range of motion. “I should be back at the races in just a couple of weeks.”The 34-year-old injured her shoulder at the Pakenham jumpouts on November 26.

Chasing his first Ballarat Cup win, trainer Dan O'Sullivan has confirmed stayer Berkeley Square will back up into his hometown feature on Saturday. Deep into his spring campaign, the five-year-old made up good ground last Saturday, running into the placings in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m). "He's bounced through his last start on Saturday fantastic," O'Sullivan said. "From the next day he'd eaten up well and he was nice and bright.

It’s been an excruciating two months for jockey Laura Lafferty both physically and mentally, since she suffered significant internal injuries in a race fall at Ballarat. Having grown up on a farm and been around horses since she was born, it wasn’t the first time she’d been in a fall or broken a bone. But she says nothing compares to what it was like waking up on that Ballarat track, trying to get air into what she’d later find out were two collapsed lungs and broken ribs.

Following her first major race fall in more than a decade, jockey Christine Puls says she's recovering well and is already planning her racing return. Puls suffered spinal bone fractures to her L1, L2, L3 and possibly L4 transverse at Naracoorte in early November. The Horsham-based rider also suffered a sprained thumb and significant body bruising. "The doctors said it's a six-to-eight-week injury before you're able to start riding again," she said.
