The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office will cooperate with federal law enforcement in arresting those sought on warrants, as allowed by law, but will not be enforcing federal immigration laws, nor raiding schools and workplaces for potential immigration violations, the sheriff said.

Sean Pond said he will seek election as Montrose County commissioner in 2026. Pond, who was appointed to represent District 3 after the death of the elected commissioner for that seat, made his announcement Thursday, along with other county officials who are seeking reelection. Brad Hughes, current Montrose County assessor, said all of those who announced were making it known early on to demonstrate continuity.

After being moved to interim status amid disputes between Montrose County commissioners and the public, Mirza Ahmed is again the Montrose County Public Health director. Commissioners met Wednesday morning in Nucla for their regular meeting, during which they convened as the Montrose County Board of Health for purposes of appointing the health director. Without debate or discussion, Commissioners Sean Pond, Sue Hansen and Scott Mijares voted to appoint Ahmed to the job.
