Biološka raznolikost, dakle raznolikost svih živih bića na Zemlji, sve više je ugrožena. Jer, ljudi sve više oštećuju ekološke sustave spaljivanjem fosilnih goriva, intenzivnom poljoprivredom i izgradnjom kao i zagađivanjem pesticidima i teškim metalima. U posljednjih 50 godina populacija kralježnjaka je smanjena za 73 posto, kaže se u aktualnom izvještaju organizacije za zaštitu prirode WWF, a znanstvenici procjenjuju da je trenutno ugrožen opstanak oko milijun životinjskih i biljnih vrsta.

Biodiversity — or the variety of all living things on Earth — is collapsing. That's because humans continue to push ecosystems to the brink through burning fossil fuels, intensive farming, urbanization and pollution. In the past 50 years, populations of vertebrates have plummeted 73%, according to a recent report by conservation group WWF, while scientists estimate about a million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, some in the coming decades.
