Em 2017, as alegações contra Harvey Weinstein romperam a barragem. Na sequência, a hashtag #MeToo — um slogan criado por Tarana Burke, em 2006, com o intuito de chamar a atenção para casos de violência sexual contra jovens mulheres não brancas — se espalhou nas mídias sociais, incentivando mulheres a contar suas histórias de abuso sexual. Nos meses seguintes, sucedeu-se uma ampla cobertura midiática, tratando, em grande parte, de casos de abuso de poder no ambiente de trabalho.
